Choosing draperies starts with fabric, but the finish of the rod is what pulls a window into the room. The right finish makes the hardware look as if it had always been there. The wrong one sits at the top of the window like an afterthought, no matter how beautiful the panels below it are.
The simplest rule we know: the finish should echo something already in the room. Look at your door handles, cabinet pulls, light fixtures, a fireplace surround or the legs of a favorite chair. Repeat one of them at the window, and the room feels finished. At Capistrano Upholstery and Draperies we help homeowners in San Clemente, Dana Point, Laguna Niguel, Newport Beach and Seal Beach choose finishes with real samples in their own light, then install the hardware and sew the draperies to fit.
Antique brass and bronze
Warm, rich and quietly traditional. Antiqued finishes are layered by hand, so each piece has depth and slight variation, never the flat shine of new metal. They suit traditional and transitional homes, dark wood furniture, warm wall colors and heavier fabrics such as velvet, damask and lined linen. In a San Clemente Spanish Colonial home, aged bronze sits beautifully beside wrought iron and terracotta.
Pairs well with: cream and ivory draperies, jewel tones, patterned fabrics, warm wood floors.
Matte black
Crisp, graphic and modern. A matte black rod draws a clean line across the top of a window and frames the view like a picture. It is the natural choice for modern homes, black window frames, and rooms where the furniture is simple and the architecture does the talking, as in many newer homes in Newport Beach.
Pairs well with: white or flax linen, sheers, black window frames, light oak.
Nickel, silver and chrome
Light, cool and fresh. Brushed nickel and soft silver keep a window airy, which is why they are favorites in coastal homes. Polished chrome is more formal and works with glamorous rooms and glossy surfaces.
Pairs well with: whites, soft blues and greys, sheers, light-filled rooms near the water.
Wood
Natural, warm and furniture-like. Wood finials and rods in a furniture-quality finish can be matched to floors, cabinetry or built-ins, so the window feels part of the architecture. Painted wood in white or cream suits cottages and coastal rooms; stained wood suits libraries, studies and traditional living rooms.
Pairs well with: natural fibers, woven shades, linen, plaids and stripes.
Mixing finishes
You do not need every metal in the house to match. One finish at the windows throughout a floor keeps things calm; a different finish in a bedroom or study is welcome. What matters is that each room has a reason for its choice. At a consultation we hold samples up against your fabric and fixtures; the right one is usually obvious within a minute.
Finish is only the start
Once the finish is chosen, we plan the rest with you: the rod diameter for the size of the window, the mounting height and width so the panels stack clear of the view, and whether a decorative rod or a motorized traverse rod suits the way you use the room. Then we sew the draperies in our San Juan Capistrano workroom and install everything ourselves. Read more in our custom draperies and Roman shades, or see all our window treatments.
